What Is the Gospel?
The gospel is the good news that God has acted in Jesus Christ to save sinners, forgive sins, and bring us back to Himself.
The Gospel Begins With God
The gospel is not mainly about self-improvement, religious performance, or finding your best life now. It begins with God, who is holy, loving, just, and good. He made us for Himself, to know Him, love Him, and walk in fellowship with Him.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1
Our Problem Is Sin
Humanity has rebelled against God. We have all sinned, fallen short of His glory, and gone our own way. Sin is not just a mistake. It is rebellion against the God who made us. Because God is just, sin brings guilt, separation, and judgment.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
“For the wages of sin is death...” — Romans 6:23
God Sent His Son
The good news is that God did not leave us in our sin. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. Jesus lived the life we failed to live, a life of perfect righteousness and obedience to the Father.
He was not merely a teacher, prophet, or moral example. He is the Son of God, the promised Messiah, and the Savior of the world.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son...” — John 3:16
Christ Died for Our Sins
At the heart of the gospel is the cross. Jesus died for our sins according to the Scriptures. He took upon Himself the judgment we deserved. On the cross, He stood in the place of sinners so that all who trust in Him might be forgiven and reconciled to God.
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures...” — 1 Corinthians 15:3
Christ Rose Again
Jesus did not remain in the grave. He rose bodily from the dead on the third day. The resurrection is God’s public declaration that Jesus is Lord, that His sacrifice was accepted, and that sin and death do not have the final word.
“...He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:4
How Do We Respond?
The gospel calls for a response. We are called to repent and believe. To repent means to turn from sin and turn to God. To believe means to trust in Jesus Christ alone, not in our own goodness, religion, or efforts, but in His finished work.
“Repent, and believe in the gospel.” — Mark 1:15
- We do not save ourselves.
- We do not earn God’s favor by performance.
- We come to Christ by grace through faith.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith...” — Ephesians 2:8–9
What Does the Gospel Promise?
Everyone who comes to Jesus in faith is forgiven, made right with God, adopted into His family, and given eternal life. The gospel does not merely improve us. It brings us from death to life.
- Forgiveness of sins
- Peace with God
- New life in Christ
- The gift of the Holy Spirit
- The hope of resurrection and eternal life
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Romans 5:1
Come to Christ
Jesus Christ is not merely part of the answer. He is the answer. If you know your need, turn to Him today. Call on Him in faith. Trust in His death and resurrection. Receive the mercy of God.
