Bullfrogs & Butterflies: What Is Meant By The Term “Born Again?”
A few years ago, I was helping in children’s church on a Sunday night when the praise and worship leader introduced a catchy little song called “Bullfrogs & Butterflies.” Beneath the playful lyrics was a deeply Biblical truth.
Both bullfrogs and butterflies undergo dramatic transformation. A bullfrog begins as a tadpole. A butterfly begins as a caterpillar. Without that transformation, they never become what they were designed to be.
In much the same way, Jesus taught that every human being must experience a spiritual transformation — a New Birth.
“Jesus answered him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’” — John 3:3
This statement lies at the very heart of the Christian Gospel.
Jesus and Nicodemus: A Religious Man Who Needed Salvation
What makes Jesus’ words even more striking is the person He was speaking to. Nicodemus was not an immoral criminal or a notorious sinner. He was a highly respected religious leader — devout, sincere, educated, and admired.
Yet Jesus told this religious man that he still needed to be Born Again.
This powerfully illustrates a truth many people struggle to understand:
- Religion is not enough.
- Sincerity is not enough.
- Good intentions are not enough.
- Church attendance alone is not enough.
Salvation is not achieved through human effort. It comes through a supernatural work of God in the heart of a person who places their faith in Jesus Christ.
What Happens When You Are Born Again?
The New Birth is the miraculous transformation that takes place when a person repents of sin and surrenders their life to Jesus Christ.
According to Scripture, several wonderful things happen:
Your sins are forgiven
Acts 3:19 and 1 John 1:7-9 teach that through Christ, our sins are washed away and we are cleansed before God.
You become part of God’s family
Romans 8:14-16, Galatians 4:4-5, and Ephesians 1:5 tell us that believers are adopted as children of God.
You become a new creation
2 Corinthians 5:17 declares that anyone in Christ becomes a completely new creation. The old life passes away, and new life begins.
You receive eternal life
John 3:14-21 promises everlasting life to all who believe in Jesus Christ.
Salvation Is a Gift of Grace
The New Birth cannot be earned. Scripture teaches that salvation is a gift given solely through the grace and love of God.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8-9
Christianity is not merely another religion. Religion is humanity trying to reach God. The Gospel is God lovingly reaching down to rescue humanity.
In Jesus Christ, we see the ultimate expression of God’s love:
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16
Why Jesus Is the Only Way
Jesus made an exclusive claim that continues to challenge people today:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” — John 14:6
If there had been another path to salvation, then Jesus would not have needed to endure the Cross. His sacrificial death demonstrates both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s love.
Many people say, “But I’m basically a good person.” Yet Scripture explains that salvation is not a comparison between “good people” and “bad people.”
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
Sin separates humanity from God, and the consequences are eternal:
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans 6:23
Physical death entered the world because of sin, but Scripture also warns of spiritual death — eternal separation from God.
How To Be Born Again
The good news is that you can come to Christ right now. God has made a way through Jesus.
1. Acknowledge Your Sin
“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
2. Repent
Turn away from sin and surrender your life to God.
3. Confess
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.” — 1 John 1:9
4. Believe
Trust fully in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the Cross.
5. Receive Christ
“As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God.” — John 1:12
The Most Important Decision You Will Ever Make
Friend, nothing in this world is more important than your relationship with God.
If you have never given your life to Jesus Christ, do not put it off. None of us are promised tomorrow.
“Therefore, if any person is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
Jesus Christ can forgive your sins, transform your life, and give you eternal hope.
Keep It Real,
